Due to its rarity, little is known about the pygmy right whale. It is understood, nonetheless, that it is by far the smallest baleen whale. The maximum weight of a pygmy right whale is 3,430 kg (7,560 lb). Less than 25 sightings of the species had been reported at sea up until 2008.
