Lavender Croton or Lavender Fever Berry * Bergboegoe * Croton Gratissimus

This is a large shrub or a relatively small tree, although it can grow up to 8m high. It is only found where the terrain is rocky. A crushed leaf presents a unique fragrance.

William John Burchell came across this plant on 19 June 1812 when he camped near a spring called Klipfontein, in the mountains directly above the present-day Olifantshoek.

'Maquassi' is the bushman name for this species. The town of Makwassie is named after it. Boegoeberg in the Northern Cape is also derived from the plant's common name.

The Bushmen used this plant for medicinal purposes, particularly extracts from the bark.
