They are found in the Pacific Ocean's deep waters, with a smaller presence in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. They reach 2.75 m (9 ft 0 in) in length and weigh around 200 kg (440 lb). They are fast swimmers and are found in groups from 100 to 1,000.
Prior to 1980 this species was described as very rare. Since then sightings have increased substantially, but there is still little known about this species.
