The Cape golden mole is a small, insectivorous mammal. These golden moles excavate superficial burrows using their conical nose shield and highly modified forefeet. Golden moles have very dense, soft, and silky coats.

They are not remotely related to rodent moles. The small eyes are covered with skin and can only distinguish between light and dark. The long clawed toes of the fore-legs are used for burrowing.
